| An interesting ride home Tuesday |
…in both spirit and weather. We mentioned that we had our snowstorm on Saturday that made up for us missing the snow in Washington this year. That snow came and left us by Monday evening. It was fun while it lasted, right? Well, against all conventional weather forecasting (which is usually the case), another snowstorm hit us, which started Tuesday afternoon and continued snowing 24 hours straight! 10+ inches later (a lot more depending on where you live in Geneva) we are now in the midst of our second winter wonderland in less than a week! Funny thing is that when we were considering moving to Geneva, we were told that it’s rare for it to snow in the city and when it does, it doesn’t stick…lucky for us they were wrong!
On Tuesday before we left work we made a snowman in the open area next to our desks (the area is enclosed in glass but open to the outside weather). Yeah, he looks kind of sad/worried, but they can’t all be happy! By the way, in the zoomed out picture of the office you can see Dave’s desk directly to the right of the glass. Ang’s desk is about 15 feet away, towards the back corner (yes, we sit that close at work!). :)
Along with the snow, Geneva is decorating and starting to get into the Christmas spirit! At least we think this is the case. There is also a celebration in Geneva called Escalade, celebrating Switzerland’s resistance against becoming part of France. Legend has it that on a cold evening (back in the day, whenever this happened), many of the women were making soup in large caldrons when France invaded Geneva. Throughout that evening (maybe longer) the women poured hot soup out of their caldrons onto the French, burning them and driving them out of the city. Doesn’t sound made up at all. All we know is that we don’t have vacation days off, so we’ll just ignore that holiday and call them Christmas decorations! The city is decorated very nicely, but there are some interesting displays up as well, most notably the string of Pacman lights (strung across the entire Geneva waterfront) and characters ready for action.
This weekend we're going to Paris and hope to see some more beautiful snowy scenery!
